Pizza, the Italian delicacy that made the whole world fall in love with it. This baked flat bread with variety of toppings and the unmistakable tomato sauce, and layered with the very addictive cheeses is truly a comfort food that you would love to indulge once in a while.
Did you know that there are only two original pizzas – the Marinara and the Margherita. It is believed that the Marinara is the older one with toppings of tomato, garlic, oregano, olive oil made by a traveller’s wife Marinara, when he returned home from his trips.
The tale of the Margherita pizza is quite known in the food world – this pizza began with modest amounts of tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil. A baker prepared three different pizzas for Queen Margherita and the Queen’s favorite was one with the three colors of Italian flag – red tomatoes, green basil leaves, and white mozzarella cheese. Thus named Pizza Margherita in her honor.
Today, there are countless variations of pizza toppings.
