Poha, Aval Upma is a quick, simple recipe made of rice flakes or beaten rice (called ‘poha‘ in the north and ‘aval’ in the south).
A slightly thicker variety of flakes /poha is generally used for this popular breakfast dish of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
In these two states potatoes are used along with poha and the dish is known as ‘Batata Poha‘ or ‘Aloo Poha‘, whereas is the south, a similar dish is prepared without the potatoes called ‘Aval Upma‘.
I made the Batata Poha for breakfast, today. Of course, i simply could not but use the unmistakable south Indian tempering of urad dal, chana dal along with the mustard seeds. Peanuts can also be used, I didn’t use today as no peanuts at home.
Juice of lemon can be substituted with tamarind juice as done in south Indian recipes.
